Employers looking to fill vacancies are faced with a big hill to climb. It’s a real gamble taking on a new member of staff – if they don’t work out you can find it very difficult to get rid of them. Once they are employed by you they are protected by a lot of rights, and so it’s no wonder why companies are reticent about taking on a stranger. More often than not the answer seems to be to spread the work over existing employees’ workload but this is not fair and just serves to increase stress in the workplace.
If there is work to be done then you need to recruit someone to do it. But how do you go about it in the right way to make sure that the person you choose is an asset to your business? You may find in the interview process that a certain person sticks out amongst all the others, but think carefully. Is there a diamond in the rough that has more potential than the obviously slick and groomed one? Here are our tips for bagging the best new employee possible:
Seek Help
Employing the help of a recruitment agent will really help you. They will help you tailor your advert to appeal to the right sort of candidates, and they will make sure it is placed in all the right places. It is well worth paying their fee for the peace of mind and the access to great quality candidates that they offer.
Interview Well
When the time comes to interview your potential employees, don’t waste the opportunity. Have a long list of questions to ask and make sure you keep them on their toes. How do they come across? Do they respond well to pressure? There are certain questions you should definitely ask – for example ‘what would you bring to this role’, but think of some other more off-the-wall questions too. This will really catch them off guard!
Ask Your Colleagues
You should always have a colleague in the interview with you as two heads are definitely better than one and they may spot something you don’t. Value their opinion and ask them what they think. Do you agree on a favourite? Take a long time to discuss each candidate in detail. What did you like and dislike about them? What is your gut instinct?
The Offer
When (and if) you have made up your mind it’s time to offer the job. Make the terms absolutely clear and let them know what wage they should expect and how much holiday they will get. After all, working for you has to appeal to them too. Agree a starting date and let all your other staff members know when this will be. Arrange a desk for them and set review dates in the diary to see how they are getting on. Keeping an eye on them in these early stages will serve you well and let them know you care.
The right employee is hard to find so keep searching for your diamond in the rough!
